Don't use the debit card so much; Use a marker to write a note on the back of your card asking that the merchant request an identification card. And think about asking your bank for a new card number every couple of years.

- Be careful with who you let handle your cards and other documents that contain bank account numbers or social security numbers, when using an ATM make sure that it hasn't been tampered with. Shred your important documents like tax forms, credit card bills, bank letters, etc.

- I think the person stealing the identity is the one to blame because if they were a normal trustworthy being then they would not steal the information in the first place. But sadly there is not that many people out there like that so identity theft occurs very often.
